Music Can Be a Stressbuster for Students

9th October 2020

There are different factors that can cause stress in a student’s life like having too many tasks at hand, a nearing exam, or an argument with friends or family. It has become quite common nowadays to bottle up our emotions and feelings putting unnecessary stress on ourselves, which can eventually lead to anxiety and even depression.

Though we cannot remove stress from their lives altogether, however, we can certainly control and try and prevent it from adversely affecting the lives of students. So, as a teacher how can you employ student counselling techniques to reduce stress in their lives?

As a part of counselling training for teachers, they are taught to use music as a tool to maintain a harmonious atmosphere in the classroom. Music has been used for ages as a relaxing agent and to reduce anxiety as it has proved really effective in stress management. It can have a deep effect on both mental health and body on individuals. Different kinds of music have different effects on us and a child is no different. You can play faster music to make your students feel more alert and concentrate better, on the other hand, upbeat music can be used to lift up their moods and make the learners feel more optimistic. A slower tempo can quiet their minds and relax their muscles, making them feel soothed while releasing the stress of the day. Music can be really effective for relaxation and stress management.

According to counsellor Clarivel Santos, “Music therapy is being used as a tool to meet non-musical goals, whether it is to relieve depression, stress or pain. It even lowers blood pressure depending on the type of music, and it can even stimulate the brain.” Since most of your young learners will love music, therefore, you can use them to help the learners reap its maximum benefits and lead a healthy life as much as possible. However, listening to music is not the only way you can help your learners relax. According to Santos, “A more active approach is playing music.” Hence if your school has a music class, encourage your learners to attend them, helping them manage their stress and lead a positive life to a great extent.
