Handling Conflict in Classroom

Handling conflict in a classroom can be quite a challenge for even the most seasoned teachers. Although as a teacher, what you can do is to foster a positive atmosphere in your classroom. However, it does not guarantee that there will be no conflicts. Conflicts in classroom are quite common since ages but can also be controlled with the right skills. Ignoring classroom conflicts can have adverse effects on students and might harm the classroom climate.

Teachers from all over the world have faced conflict in their classrooms at some point in their teaching career. But are they really aware of the techniques and ways to handle such a situation in class? Those who are not aware of the certain ways to tackle a conflict in classroom, need to be aware of those techniques. There are several child counselling courses for teachers that might be immensely helpful. These courses focus on the tactics that a teacher should apply while handling a difficult situation in class. It will give them a clear picture of the techniques that are useful while handling conflict in a classroom. One might also take counselling classes online.

 

Some of the strategies for dealing conflict are mentioned below -

 

  • The most important thing is to face the situation instead of avoiding conflict and be ready to respond and handle it
  • SOAR (stop, observe, assess, react)
  • You must also learn to acknowledge emotions with expressions like “I see that you’re upset,” or “I understand that this is a powerful topic for you”.
  • Take every situation as a learning opportunity and present it as such to students
  • Deliver dialogues on academic concepts and not personal opinions.

Thus, it can be concluded that conflicts are inevitable in a classroom and must channelled properly to avoid damage in relationships and a deteriorated classroom atmosphere.
