Teachers play an essential role in bridging the gap after recognizing the psychological effects on the students. If you can be a teacher who can be trusted, displays empathy, and supports students as and when required, you can be a good student counselor. In the absence of a trained counselor, you can perform his/her role and help students. The best teacher is most often a combination of the two.

Some Qualities of a Teacher as a Counsellor

It is essential to understand that being a counselor is not just a set of skills that can be randomly acquired during the process. Here are some qualities you must possess:

If you are trying to be a student counselor, then you must be a good listener. You must be able to infer what your student is saying or feeling just by reading their body language. You must show genuine interest in what the student is saying. You should show patience, supportive body language, and practice self-control while responding to the student's cue.

  • High Integrity Levels

When students share their most troubling issues, you should be trustworthy to not disclose the information to anyone else. Not students would want their peers to know about their disturbed family background or abusive relationships and hence you should breach trust and maintain a high level of transparency with them.

  • Exploratory And Empathetic

You should be empathetic when you listen to the issue and try to analyze it from a student's point of view. Additionally, you should also have skills to maneuver the conversation to make them share more and find an appropriate solution.

  • Non-Judgemental

As a teacher, you should be compassionate and empathetic towards your students. Stay away from negative comments and try to portray the bad things in a good light. Practice self-reliance and be consistent about your emotions. Try not to let your emotions and moods rub off on the students who come asking for them. Maintain your composure and try to help them out even if you are having a bad day.
